Fragile landscapes - A battle between nature & humans in Uttrakhand

In the 70s a ferocious flood swept Alaknanda valley till Rishikesh, huge landslides and many loss of lives downhill. The Ganges was in danger. Felling of trees, log mafias was making the place barren till a lady by the name Gaura Devi led the Chipko movement. She died in 1991, movement ceased…houses and commercial complexes came up like monsoon mushrooms. Thick with tourist traffic and endless hotels, spas, eateries and provision stores has called for another ferocity by the Himalayas at the Mandakini. Ganges is again in danger. In between in 1995 the earthquake struck at the same lands keeping Uttarkashi as the epicenter. But this July was the worst. My images are a tour of the never ending traumas that the place would bear in times to come. Better we correct ourselves or wait for another sad news to make the headlines. It doesn’t look beautiful.
